MACY & TIGER'S PUPS
Flickennel - Dachshunds with ALTITUDE!!!
INTRODUCTION:
This handsome trio of LONGHAIRED boys was born on November 8, 2011, and are ready to go home as of January 3, 2012. Uncommonly good looks are common at Flickennel, and these little hombres are as good as they come!
MOTHER:
Macy is one of our little group of red sable miniature dachshunds, mostly sired by Ace, our black & tan who produces sable pups like clockwork, as long as he's bred to red females. Sure as shootin', it looks like one of these boys is sable - Macy has what it takes, too! Macy's temperament is much like her parents, Mandy and Ace - pure sweetness wrapped in dog-hair!
FATHER:
Tiger's parents were Too Cute Tootsie and Tiger King Cuddler - do you get some idea about what his personality is? He's a furry ball of LOVE! Tiger is a red brindle longhair who looks a lot like his namesake, the tiger - red with black stripes. However, there's not one iota of ferocity in this tiger - he might lick you to death, that's all.
Both parents are pictured below the descriptions of their sons.

THE PUPPIES:
PUPPY #1 is red as red can be, with some white on his chin, chest and all four paws - WHOA-ho-ho!!! Some piebald snuck in from Macy's grandfather, Sensational Silas, who was a longhaired red piebald - neither Macy nor her mother has any white on them at all, but it skipped the generations and popped out on this little rascal! We love the surprise factor in breeding dachshunds - you never know when a long-forgotten gene from the distant past will crop up, usually with beautiful results - as in this boy. He's priced at a very affordable $400, unless you want his AKC registration, which will cost another $50. Please pick your Payment Option accordingly....
PUPPY #2 is a red brindle with no white on him - just like his father. So far, his pleasant nature seems just like Dad's, too - you're going to fall in love with this fellow - we guarantee it! Tiger's father was a shorthair, and Tiger's coat has always been easy to care for. Most longhaired dachshunds are pretty easy to maintain, because they're not like Afghan hounds, with hair hanging clear down to to their toes ..... oh, wait.... they do - but their toes are a whole lot closer to their bellies than an Afghan's are!!! (Ah, the blessings of having stubby legs!) Anyway, doxie long hair is not usually very long or very thick - which would defeat the purpose of having it on a hunting-breed dog, since it would gather burrs and stuff... Doxies are quite easy to care for, no matter what their coat type is. This pup is also priced at $450 with his AKC registration, but only $400 without it.
PUPPY #3 started out looking black & tan, with a white spot on his chest - there's that persistent piebald gene showing up again! However, this lad is doing what a lot of sables do - they wait till you're not looking, then start changing from black & tan to red sable! Now, there really aren't a LOT of sables - it's the hardest color/pattern to achieve in dachshunds, and it took us years to produce our first one. In fact, it wasn't until this lad's grandpa Ace came into the picture, and we bred him to a red female who carried chocolate to see if he'd produce chocolates, that he not only did THAT, but also produced a RED SABLE! Ace is the only one of our males who consistently produces sables, and only one to a litter. It's HARD to get sable! Sable is best seen on a red dog, because hair on the body is red with a black tip, making the dog look black & tan until you part the hair and look closely at it. There are other typical characteristics to look for, too. ... So, because of his rarity, and because he's such a handsome sable boy, we're pricing this little gem at $600, plus $50 for his AKC registration if you are choosing him for breeding or showing.
MOTHER:
Here's Flicks Sensational Sable Macy Rue, who has the unusual feature of a red head and what looks like a black body, but if we part her hair, it's red under the black. She also has the characteristic "widow's peak," the black point that comes partway down between the eyes, although hers is just a shadow of it. She's definitely a "different" sable!
FATHER:
And here's Flicks Crimson Tiger... a longhaired red brindle. Brindles can run the gamut from almost NO striping, to so much striping they look black - no two are ever exactly alike. Their stripes are like our fingerprints!
Our red sable dogs & their parents:
Boys - all sons of Ace: Rowdy (Cuddles), Slinky (Fergie), Spade (Pitter Pat)
Girls: Fergie (Rue & Herby), Heidi (Rue & Dutch), Macy (Mandy & Ace), Snuggles (Cuddles & Herby)
The funny thing is, Ace, a black & tan, had fathered a number of litters before he ever produced a red sable pup. And Herby waited even longer before HIS first one! He is just a red with black overlay on his ears, not a sable. Rue is a sable dapple (daughter of Dusty Longfellow, pictured above right), and Cuddles is such a dark red brindle, she could also be sable and it doesn't show. (Both Rue and Cuddles are now retired to their respective pet homes.)
Do you see the hint of the black overlay on her forehead, between her ears, coming down to a point in the center? That's the typical "widow's peak" found on many true sable dachshunds. The sable pattern is far more than just a red dog with black ears, or a black 'saddle.' Each red body hair must be tipped with black, so a very noticeable 2-tone coloration can be observed when the hair is parted. Macy is the only sable we've ever seen with a red head, but with the widow's peak still visible. She's unique!
THIS is one handsome little dog! This is Rowdy, son of Cuddles & Ace, and does he show all the true sable signs! Look at that classic "widow's peak"!!!
This is Dusty Longfellow, the great-grandsire of Macy and the reason we started trying to breed for sables. Dusty has since passed away but just look at what his genes have done, so many generations forward.
Sadly missed by his owner, our friend, Barb Sampson.
